Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security 2026
The Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security was established following a decision by African Heads of State and Government at the 15th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Kampala, Uganda, in July 2010. The first commemoration was launched in Lilongwe, Malawi, on 31 October 2010, with 30 October subsequently recognized as the annual day of observance. The event addresses three interconnected development challenges: ensuring that sufficient food is produced and available, enabling people to obtain affordable and nutritious diets, and building sustainable food systems capable of withstanding economic, environmental, and climate-related shocks. It also provides a continental platform for governments, regional organizations, development partners, researchers, civil society, and the private sector to exchange experiences and discuss actions to strengthen food and nutrition security.
